History

The Comité de Familias en Acción is a group of organized families from West Mesa near the Emerson, Carson and Westwood school area who works toward improving their quality of life. The group formed in 2000 in response to growing concerns over educational, economic, social and housing issues.

Accomplishments 2000—2003

• Secured a part time coordinator through NEDCO and MesaCAN.

• Improved communications and dialog with the administrations of Emerson Elementary, Carson Junior High, and Westwood High School via regular monthly meetings.

• Collected $1 per month from the resident members as a commitment to creating a viable organization able to seek matching funds to address long-term housing/co-housing goals.

• Lobbied the City of Mesa into creating Beverly Park, a new recreational area in close proximity to the neighborhood.

• Recognized by the City of Mesa for neighborhood excellence at the 2002 Spirit of Mesa Award.

• Raised over $2,000 through fund raising activities and catering contracts.

• Participated in the 2002 National Conference for Community and Economic Development (NCCED).

• Partnered with the local Lutheran Church to provide space for a Head-Start program, which benefits primarily the children of the neighborhood.
